Concept

This pattern design suite draws inspiration from the natural world, capturing the intricate details discovered when looking down and examining the beauty found on the forest floor. The suite includes wrapping paper, bed linens, and fabric bolt formats, showcasing patterns of varying complexity. The challenges of this project lay in striking a balance between maintaining continuity between the patterns while also variety within them.

Athyrium filix-femina, “Lady Fern” Pattern

A one-color pattern featuring the lady fern, a plant commonly found in Michigan. The intricacy of the pattern lies in the inclusion of sub-patterns within each fern. Each leaflet along the fern blade consists of three unique custom-made pattern brushes that run along the frond’s path. The ferns in the pattern are made to seamlessly fit together and can be scaled to any size. This pattern is displayed in a bedding application, and works best in a dark-on-light setting.

Lavandula angustifolia, English Lavender Pattern

This pattern draws inspiration from vintage Scandinavian wallpaper. My goal was to create a pattern with a visible yet unobtrusive repeat, making it ideal for large-scale applications. I used a muted color palette that complemented the vintage aesthetic and added to the pattern’s overall aesthetic. Featured alongside this pattern is my acrylic painting, “Respite”.  This painting is a symbolic self-portrait that represents the importance of allowing myself time to rest and fully experience the present moment, and the importance of spending time with those most important to me.
